Bonjour! (Warning – lots of pictures in this post! Not quite “home movies,” but….)
Let’s talk about the Musee d’Orsay. (Creating a little mood here – feel free to listen to Don McLean sing about Vincent Van Gogh in the background)
Think “Paris” and “Museum” and most people automatically think of the Louvre.
HOWEVER, the Musee d’Orsay is PHENOMINAL. I love the building as much or more than the paintings inside! Just across the river from the Louvre, the Orsay houses art created between 1848 and 1915. That’s a short amount of time, but it’s unique in that it has a brilliant collection from the Impressionists.
The building wasn’t originally a museum – the Orsay was actually a built as a train station for the 1900 World Fair. Pretty cool, huh? The building itself is a work of art, with the classical stone exterior belaying a modern metal and glass interior.
I felt STUPID that I had been to Paris several times 30 years ago and had never even heard of it – until I found out it wasn’t opened until 1986. So it was only a few years old when we were there! Okay, maybe not so stupid now!
The main draw of the museum is the stunning collection of Impressionist paintings, including art from Monet, Renoir, Degas, Manet, and Van Gogh. It’s not only paintings, though – there are sculptures and jewelry (the most intricate tiny cameos carved in ivory!) and artifacts and exquisite views of the Basilica of the Sacré-Coeur and Montmartre.
And More Fun Facts –
I found RITZ crackers in a tiny box at the biggest grocery store in the world and was told that it was my lucky day! What?!?!?! Ritz crackers, the salt-of-the-earth (ha ha) staple that is just a basic no-big-deal cracker? Apparently they are generally NOT TO BE HAD in France….how bizarre!
Other things on our ‘CANNOT FIND HERE’ list (NOTE! Pay close attention if you are coming to visit! The price of admission!)
