View from the Roof

So I braved the cold with my coffee this morning and teetered up the tiny wooden circular stairs to see the sun coming out — the Ferris Wheel is almost up in the Place de Jaude, for the Christmas tree lighting tonight!  Should be beautiful!  Definitely expect more pictures!  I’ll have a lot to tell about Christmas in France.

The kids are coming for Christmas (and Robert’s 30th birthday – !!!) and we’ll leave on the 26th for Paris on the train.  We’ll spend the day together in the Paris Christmas Markets on the Champs Elysee on the 27th, then they’ll return on the 28th.  NOT LONG ENOUGH!  So excited that they are coming.

In the rush to move/pack/store, we didn’t bring any of our Christmas decorations.  Nothing.  Like being newly married, no Christmas lovelies and memories from over the years.  🙁   We’ll have to find some new ones!

Still no internet or TV yet.   Talk about serious withdrawal.  It’s BAD!  Tomorrow we should be getting our car, the washer, the oven, and a new bed we bought from some other expat Michelin folks that are going back stateside.  A big weekend of still moving and setting up!  🙂

More soon – just a quickie of the morning view.  Breathtakingly lovely.

Betwixt and Between

TOOOOOOO MUCH!  AAAAARGH!

Last week I mentally melted into a pool of slushy sauce. My brain shut down and I just went to bed.  Decision /cultural /brainwave / identity / language overload.  Clean slate can be overwhelming! Too many decisions!

38 days until chilluns’ come for Christmas.  Yea!!!!  A solid target to shoot for! It’s a little unnerving, truly, when many of your known parameters are removed, your ‘pins in the map’ that tell your brain where you are and what you’re doing.  If you think that’s silly, just trust me on this!

OK, so this was really bizarre!  It’s a place in centre ville (center of town) that you can go to have Cat Therapy!  Not therapy for cats – therapy for YOU!  It’s a small store that serves tea and coffee and small bites, and there are 10 or so cats inside that you can hang out with.  The cats are fat and lazy and apparently don’t mind being petted.  I didn’t go in, but it was fascinating to watch through the window.

French Class is good – very hard for me – and I’m stretched to the max to keep up! I’m on the main campus of University of Clermont Avergne, in a class with eight other Michelin spouses (husbands AND wives).  Methode Total immersion (NO-ENGLISH-AT-ALL).  Tanner begins his instruction on November 29 — only his is one-on-one with a professeur on a totally different campus than mine.  We’ll be back in the home-work-every-night business again soon!  However, this is an incredible opportunity!  Who gets to do this???

APARTMENT!!!  Have the keys but no hot water yet!  Several items need IMMEDIATE FIXING.  However, can’t wait to show you everything in person.  (hint, hint….)  (Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms.  Whatcha waitin’ for?)

Cannot believe how fortunate & blessed we are to get this apartment.  (Ha ha – and I was whining about losing the other one.  This one is so much better!) Two more nights of this current bed in the temp apartment, and my own pillows and mattress can’t come fast enough.  Goodbye, living in suitcases since September!  Movers are coming TOMORROW!  If they really do lift the furniture up through the windows of a 5th floor apartment, then you can count on seeing pictures of THAT!

Oh, and parking will be good (by French standards), too —

Old parking space in the dungeon:

New parking space in a garage:

(Not our car – still have a rental.)

Thank you for the prayers — I can feel them.  Miss you like crazy!

Love,

Mindy

Psalm 61:2 From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed.

Wish me luck!

I start French classes tomorrow (Tuesday) at the University of Clermont Auvernge – yea!  Very excited.  About three city blocks, then a short tram ride, then four more city blocks to get there.  And it’s 35 degrees outside!  (Just ask Tanner — he’s been walking to work every day! BRRRRRRRR)

I HOPE that I’m not in a class that’s too advanced.  EEEEEEE!!!  That’s my concern!  The class started the end of September, so I’m a wee bit behind already….but bring it on!

Tanner will start soon, as well – different class, we don’t know where.  Still lots of unknowns!

Moving is postponed…..”should” get keys on Friday, movers come next Tuesday….so another week in this temp apartment.  We’ll manage, bite our tongues, and smile!

I know you all have a lot going on, too….thinking of all of you so often and miss you!

#DRINKINGFROMAFIREHOSE

Today, just tidbits from my pinball machine head!

Friendliness – so far, 99% approval rating!  Even when we botch it up badly.  If the person answers in English, I am determined to speak French back, unless I just absolutely cannot come up with a vital word.  You can get by pretty well in the world by pointing, saying please, and thank you! They actually DO appear to appreciate the efforts to speak French!

Feeling “Frenchie” – walked to the hypermarche (grocery store) all by my lonesome with my cloth bags, ordered ham and cheese at the deli (en Francaise, of course), and checked out without being too self-conscious.  Only buy what you can carry on foot! (Bottled water and wine is HEAVY.)  And it’s a good thing there are pictures of the food on most packaging.  No ranch dressing. (REALLY?) Couldn’t find anything like ziplock bags.  I did see Swiffer, Tropicana, and Lays, however!  Food = $$$.  Great supermarket, outdoor market, corner grocery, and individual bakeries and cheese shops.  No one is lacking for choices here — just not the choices we are used to.

Clothing & Fashion – in the storefronts, some clothing is beautiful and some is “meh.”  Just like home!  Women are wearing their jeans snug to the ankle, sometimes cuffed, and short boots.  Muted scarves galore. Bold eyeglasses are fashionable, and are trending back towards large.  Men are ALL in skinny pants and pointy shoes.  The wedding dresses in the store windows are fantastically beautiful.  And, of course, colors are black, gray, black, brown, and more black.  Did I say black, black, and more black?

Language – between Tanner and me, we are getting along quite well in daily commerce!  He conversed with the rental car lady much faster than I could follow; I got along better in conversations with the real estate agent.  We need to stay together all of the time.  Wonder how it’s going for him AT WORK today!  Today is the end of his first week.

Outlook – So grateful for having this lovely apartment on Rue Blatin to look forward to.  Otherwise, our attitude about this temp accommodation would be less than happy.  Knowing that we have a beautiful carrot in front of that stick in about 15-20 days makes it very tolerable!  Mattress practically on the floor and all.  The new apartment is over the top!

Current Kitchen – Figuring out how to turn on the oven was a challenge.  Seriously.  Strange little symbols, no words or degrees.  Funny how we go through our daily lives on auto pilot until it all changes and the smallest of things take mental exercise!

Recycling – Ummmm…..there are different bins for glass, plastic, and trash, but all of them seem to contain the same garbage.  Sounds good, but so far, I don’t see any actual sorting going on.  Such a disconnect between all the organic food offered, conservation promotions, and the 80% smoking rate.

Address – by the end of November, anyway –

Mr et Mme Tanner Espey   (or Mme Mindy Espey)

20 Rue Blatin, 4eme Etage

63000, Clermont Ferrand, France

We’ll have four bedrooms, an inside atrium (jardin d’hiver), a small private roof-top terrace with 360 degree views, lots of natural light, and 2.5 bathrooms.  2,500 SF!  Just incredible.  Unheard-of.  PACK YOUR BAGS!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!

Parking – I cannot even tell you how we got that very small Renault rental into that teeny tiny sardine-can-of-a-box that is assigned to our apartment.  It literally took 30 minutes, guiding Tanner back and forth, inching in with perhaps 2” (TWO INCHES!) on either side of the car.  He could hardly get out of the car.  We may not drive again until we move to the new place!  WHICH, by the way, has two nice covered places without any sides!  Halleluiah for the little things in life!

Internet & Data – THE THORN IN OUR SIDE.  We DON’T have internet in the temporary apartment, which is a killer.  (Which tram to take? The weather today? I don’t know. No connection. You get it.) I have 2 GB / month with my new French phone.  We have used the phone as a hotspot to get our email, etc. on our computers over the weekend, not even very much, and blew through that monthly allotment of 2 GB in 2 days.  That bill is going to be a doozie.  And regarding internet for the new apartment – we were told that it may take up to another MONTH for the internet to be connected.  Even the locals tell us, “This is France!  You must be patient.  Things do not happen quickly.”  In the meantime, our connectivity will be hit or miss.  I am chafing at the bit…don’t like not being TOTALLY CONNECTED.

However,  every day’s a winner.  Thanks, Dad, for imprinting this outlook on us!  Love you all and thinking of you constantly,

Mindy

THE NEW NORMAL ISN’T NORMAL

Everything is changing.  Think “Tilt-O-Whirl” and that slinging, disorienting whiplash feeling!

Tulsa was excellent. Mom, Larry, Myrna, Cheryl, Joan…strong ties that weave our tapestry.  Not always easy, but always heartwarming. Tanner also hopped over for the day, courtesy of Brendan (thank you!) & Delta, and we saw Jim’s perfect apartment situation – what a great place!  Mom and I spent an entire day at the Tulsa State Fair.  Childhood throwback!  WONDERFUL fun, petting zoo and all!  We always have such a good time together.

Tanner picked me up from the airport at GSP and jumped on Highway 85 south.  When he passed the Michelin headquarters on Pelham Road, I briefly thought, “WHERE is he GOING?”  A minute later down the highway at 65 mph, I thought, “Maybe we are going to eat somewhere?”  Then realization dawned….we weren’t going HOME.  The car should have been on autopilot, like every other airport trip for the last 20 years…but it wasn’t.  We were heading to the temporary corporate apartment.  WOW.  Talk about reality check.  And hard to swallow! (Another swerving curve on the Tilt-o-Wheel…or maybe it’s the HIM-A-LA-YA (click here).  Do you want to go FASTER?  <yes!!!> I CAN’T HEAR YOU! <YESSSSS!>)*

Then the weekend wrote another lovely chapter in our story with Brendan (HAPPY 28th BIRTHDAY!), Robert, and Leslie (HAPPY 2nd ANNIVERSARY!). Here’s to a very special evening of family-style Italian dining in Atlanta at Maggiano’s!  Have to admit, I cried when leaving Brendan on Sunday….hurts me to leave them all!  #EVERY.SINGLE.TIME

Atlanta’s Maison de France [French Consulate or Embassy], was an [ahem!] interesting experience this morning.  Very methodical, mechanical, and frosty.  We sat across from a stern, impassive young woman, devoid of any emotion, separated by thick glass and an intercom (like prison in the movies), and passed papers and cash back and forth.  After 30 minutes of keying on the computer in near silence, she said, “You may leave now.” Did we pass?  Will we get our visas?  I guess so!  But I’m not sure!  Welcome to France.  We’re leaving sunny Southern hospitality, y’all.

Two weeks, two days to go……I’m starting to feel all twisted inside.

Bunco is tomorrow night and I can’t go…and tap class…and all the regular, normal things of our life. We’re still here in Greenville, but everything is Alice-in-Wonderland different.  I guess it’s time to go, if we’re gonna go.  Through the looking glass!

LESSON DU JOUR

Here’s an overlay with a map of France placed on top of the continental US.  France is slightly smaller than two Colorados (and smaller than Texas).  The population of Paris is just a little larger than that of Houston, our 4th largest city in the US.

Bonsoir, mes amis!

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”  Eternity came without warning to the murdered people in Las Vegas. Are you ready right now? You can be.

P.S.

My grandmother used to sleep in a chair, fully dressed, the night before a trip. She didn’t want to miss anything!   I can’t sleep.  Too excited about going to Tulsa .:-)  Yea!!!
